Snake Proof Fencing : DIY Snake Fencing

Sanake one

Keeping snakes off your property is crucial for the safety of your animals, family and construction sites. Sprays and deterrents are a start, but nothing matches the reliability and strength of a physical barrier.

Our fencing requires no batteries, no reapplication, no sprays or repellent granules (that don’t work!) and no guesswork.

Fence Types

How to Choose the Right Snake Fence

When it comes to snake fencing, opening size is the first aspect to consider. If the openings are too large, snakes can just pass right through. If it’s small enough to not allow snakes to pass through but not small enough, then the snakes can become stuck in the mesh and die. In most cases, based on what we see customers use, a snake mesh fence should have 1/4 x 1/4 inch openings. Be sure to carefully plan for your specific needs, as there are many variables; ultimately, you will need to choose the right product for your project.

Keep in mind that poly fencing on its own, without the metal base, is not suitable as snake-proof fencing, as snakes can push through it over time.

Snake-Proof Fencing Options

The most commonly chosen option is a snake fence with a ground overlay or overlap. Go with a metal snake fence barrier  of at least 30 inches tall, with at least 6 inches of extra fencing bent flat and staked to the outer perimeter in an L-shape. This will prevent snakes from pushing against the base and going beneath your fencing.

If you want a combination fence (a fence to also keep in or out other animals as well), use a taller poly fence intended for larger animals paired with a metal snake fence barrier as described above at the bottom. This provides exclusion of multiple animals from a single fencing system with just one easy installation. Keep in mind that poly fencing on its own, without the metal base, is not suitable as snake-proof fencing, as snakes can push through it over time.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions on Our Snake-Proof Fencing

What is the best snake fence?

When it comes to snake-proof fencing, opening size is the most crucial element. Go with mesh with 1/4 x 1/4 inch openings to prevent snakes from passing through. You should also choose one installed at 30” tall with at least 6” of fencing overlapped to prevent climbing and pushing underneath.

Your snake-proof fencing should be at least 30” tall with at least 6” of overlap bent and staked to the ground to prevent snakes from going under the fence. Snakes can easily climb and support up to a third of their body weight while climbing, so choosing the right height is crucial.

What is a snake fence barrier?

A snake fence barrier is a metal mesh panel installed at the bottom of the fence line to prevent snakes from entering at ground level. Use it alone as a perimeter solution or as the bottom layer of a larger fencing system. Stand-alone perimeter snake fences are popular on construction sites, for example, when pipelines are being dug. While working inside of a trench, snakes above the hole can slide down from above into work areas. A snake fence can prevent this.

Is a snake mesh fence better than a snake repellent?

Yes. While many people start off by searching for the best snake repellent for their yard, they are not a permanent solution for areas where snakes are a constant problem. Repellents wash away, need repeated applications, and are not guaranteed to work on all snakes (if at all). A snake mesh fence is a permanent and effective solution that doesn’t require ongoing maintenance once it’s installed.
