Cat Fence Comparison

A cat fence kit is a selection of fencing, fence posts, accessories and hardware to build a complete cat fence starting from scratch.

These cat fences are not electric and do not shock your pets. They are designed to safely keep your cats and other pets like dogs in - while also keeping other animals out.

There are 1000+ fence kits, combinations and options within each of these cat fences.

The purpose of this page is to help you compare the choices to best select the cat fence you need.

In general, most cat fence customers select these three things:

  • A cat fence with no climb extenders. This type of cat fence includes extenders that mount on top of our fence posts creating a physical barrier to prevent cats from climbing over the fence. No climb fence kits are available in one direction, or in both directions (to prevent climbing animals from getting in – like raccoons that go after cat food for example).
  • A cat fence with overlap. This type of cat fence includes extra fencing overlapped and staked to the ground. Cats are sneaky; this acts as a dig deterrent and covers small peaks and valleys in your landscape your cat can use to escape.
  • A cat fence with a chew barrier base. Not all cats are chewers but most other animals are. With a poly cat fence with an all metal chew barrier base (most popular) you have the best chance of building an escape proof area for your cats while protecting them from predators like coyotes.
  • Below are our cat fence kits separated by type:

With Chew Barrier Poly cat fencing kits with a metal base, or all metal cat fence kits that include an extra layer of smaller opening size bottom wire. This is a good all purpose fence for any non-climbing cats. You can upgrade through different options within the kits to modify the chew barrier or to add tensioning. These fence kits are really designed for keeping other animals out, like coyotes, dogs, snakes and other small animals.

BROWSE OPTIONS

Without Chew Barrier Poly and metal cat fencing kits that include overlap onto the ground. These one layer cat fence kits are great for general purpose barriers to keep other animals out or to keep any non-climbing cats in. This is a good general purpose barrier fence.

BROWSE OPTIONS

Without Chew Barrier Or Overlap Poly cat fencing kits or all metal cat fence kits without overlap on the ground (great for removable fences). These cat fence kits are the perfect choice for customers that need to make their fence removable seasonally, or at some point in the future take the fence down. Typically, you would leave the included ground sleeves in the ground and pull out the posts and fencing. When you need to install the fence again, slide the posts back into the sleeves, tighten the locking set screws and reattach with more fence ties.

Climb Proof With Chew Barrier (Most Popular) Climb proof poly cat fencing kits with a metal base that include extra fencing overlapped onto the ground and staked to the ground. This is our most popular type of cat fence kit. These cat fence kits are great for your escape artist that loves to climb. Included are anti-climb post extenders that create an overhead canopy not possible to climb around. Great for feral cats and feral cat colonies. Different heights, strengths and configurations are available to choose from inside each kit.

Climb Proof Without Chew Barrier Climb proof poly cat fencing kits that include overlap onto the ground. These cat fence kits are great for your escape artist that loves to climb. Included are anti-climb post extenders that create an overhead canopy not possible to climb around. Includes overlapped poly fencing on the ground. These fence kits make decent removable or temporary climb proof cat fence kits. The hazard with these fence kits is the lack of a metal base at the bottom. We haven't heard of a cat being able to chew through any of our poly fencing, it's really other animals on the outside that can try and get in.

Climb Proof Without Chew Barrier Or Overlap Climb proof poly cat fencing kits without overlap on the ground (good for balconies/porches for example). Another example would be customers that need to place a new climb proof fence in front of an existing fence with a solid base that cats can't get through (wood fence, etc). These cat fence kits are great for your escape artist that loves to climb. Included are anti-climb post extenders that create an overhead canopy not possible to climb around. No metal base or overlapped fencing included.

Climb Proof (Both Ways) With Chew Barrier (Popular) Climb proof poly cat fencing kits with a metal base that include extra fencing overlapped onto the ground and staked to the ground. Includes no-climb extenders on both sides of the fence. These cat fence kits are designed to keep climbing animals both in and out. Includes a second set of anti-climb extenders and additional fencing to keep climbing animals in and climbing animals out. This is a great example of a fence to keep cats in, including feral cats, and to keep coyotes out - as well as other cats. This is the fence system of choice for cat rescues. This system is great for segregating different populations of cats.

Cat Fence Information

Cat fence photo example of how to successfully use cat fencing to build cat fences

There are a few different options for keeping cats in on the market. If you have a need to create an escape proof area for your cats (while keeping other animals out!) our cat fences are for you. Here’s why:

  • Our cat fencing is strong but nearly invisible from a distance. It's designed to blend in with your existing landscape.
  • Completely NON-ELECTRIC, no shock cat containment without any components to fail. No need to shock your cat either!
  • Strongest components. We use heavy gauge steel support posts and wider corner posts with solid steel no climb extenders. We offer cat fences with steel tension cable as an option, engineered to not only keep your cats in but other animals out.
  • Our cat fences are customizable. Choose the best strength, height, chew resistance and more for your project. This includes cat fences with four sides and a top and small opening size bottom wire to keep even snakes and the smallest animals out.
  • Renting? Need a temporary cat fence or portable cat fence? All of our cat fences with ground sleeves can be installed permanently or made removable if needed. Use included locking set screws to release our fence posts.
  • Most of our cat fence kits include fencing that's overlapped on top of the ground and pinned to the ground with ground stakes. This is very important for cats and other pets because it covers changes in elevation and prevents your cat from using their noses to push up under a fence to get out, or from digging to get out.
  • Our poly cat fence kits have flex. That's important because it’s naturally as a characteristic not easy to climb. Poly fence also doesn’t have memory – it flexes back to it’s original shape (different than metal fence which once it’s bent, stays bent). Metal fence is very stiff where cats can climb it like a ladder.

Cat Fence Frequently Asked Questions

Can you fence a cat?
Yes. Cats can safely be contained while keeping other predator animals out. This is done by installing a fence with climb protection that cats and other animals can’t climb over.
Do cat fences work?
Yes. A properly installed cat fence with no climb protection will absolutely keep cats in. Some cat rescues secure hundreds of cats separated by gender, by age, ailment etc.
How do I fence in my yard for cats?
Start by choosing an area without climbable trees or objects that cats can climb up or jump onto to get over a fence. Cats are very agile climbers and can jump up to distances of 6 feet or more. Install a fence. Pay close attention to bottom areas cats can dig down and under to get out or small side areas they can push through, like where the fence meets a building.
How long is a typical fence for a cat?
100-200 linear feet. Most cat fences for a back yard start at a house or building, extend into the back yard area, then return again to the house or building. This allows for enough space for cats to roam free, lunge in the sun, chase bugs etc. A safe area with a cat door access or outdoor shelter is recommended.
What is the best height for a cat fence?
The most common height for a no climb cat fence is 7 1/2 feet tall. This gives you an overhead canopy at 7 ½ feet and clearance for an access gate below. It also makes it more difficult for cats to jump from an object (like the top of a gas grill) on top of the cat fence canopy to escape. As you know cats are very sneaky and will take every opportunity to test the new area you have built for them.
Do electric fences work for cats?
No. Cats are great climbers, can jump up to 6 feet and are very good at escaping from electric fences. Electric fences also don’t stop other animals from entering an area, especially predators like coyotes.
