Garden Fence Comparison

A garden fence kit is a selection of fencing, fence posts, accessories and hardware to build a complete garden fence starting from scratch. Please review the below garden fence ideas to keep your plants safe.

We also have a dedicated, targeted website Benner's Garden's just for garden fences, to visit - see the tab at the top of any page.

They are engineered to keep out many different animals including deer, depending on the options you choose.

There are 1000+ fence kits, combinations and options within each of these garden fences.

The purpose of this page is to help you compare the choices to best select what you need for your garden.

In general, most customers select these three things:

  • A garden fence with overlap. This type of design includes extra fencing overlapped and staked to the ground to the outside of the area. This acts as a dig deterrent and covers small peaks and valleys in your landscape animals can use to enter your garden. Some customers bury this overlap to exclude tunneling animals like moles.
  • An all metal garden fence or garden fence with a chew barrier base. Most animals, with the exception of deer, will try and chew your fence to gain access (like rabbits and groundhogs!). With an all metal fence, an all metal fence with a chew barrier base or a poly fence with an all metal base (most popular) you have the best chance of keeping your garden pest free.
  • A 6 foot tall or higher garden fence. The minimum suggested height for small garden areas up to 100 linear feet is 6 feet. Other areas: 7 to 7 ½ feet for areas up to 500 linear feet and 8 feet or taller for areas over 500 linear feet. This is a general guide and not a rule please use your own judgement. For example, if you are wrapping bushes like arborvitae to prevent deer damage, 6 feet tall will work for any footage length. In general the less space deer have to be able to jump inside an area, the shorter the fence can be – they are less likely to try and jump inside a 25x25 area than a 100 x 100 garden plot.

Below are our garden fence kits separated by type:

One Layer Of Garden Fence With Overlap

Steel or poly kits that include a minimum of 6" of overlap to pin to the ground. Great for all types of non-chewing animals like deer that can also try and push up under a fence with their noses. Also can be removable or permanent.

BROWSE OPTIONS
Garden fence no overlap

One Layer Of Garden Fence No Overlap

These kits don't have extra layers of steel rodent barrier fencing or overlap pinned to the ground. For example, you may have 5 foot high posts and 5 foot fencing to go on the posts. This is the best configuration for portable fences, seasonal garden fences or movable barrier fences. For example, a 4 foot fence to keep geese from pulling apart a lawn area or to set up a fence to keep children from wandering out of the yard.

BROWSE OPTIONS
Garden fencing no climb post extenders

With No-Climb Post Extenders

There are many different garden fence ideas on the market. If you have a need to create a fence to keep animals out of your garden, our fence is for you. Here’s why:

  • Our garden fencing is effective but nearly invisible from a distance. It's engineered to be as invisible as possible, to blend in with your existing landscape.
  • Most options are completely NON-ELECTRIC, no wires to break, no parts to fail over time. A real actual physical barrier to keep animals out.
  • Our garden fences are customizable. There are many different ways to install a garden fence. Here's some examples cited by the University of Georgia: Garden Fencing - With Critterfence, choose the best strength, height, chew resistance and more for your garden fence with confidence. This includes garden fences with four sides and a top (keep out squirrels, birds) or small opening size fence to keep out even the smallest animals. We have specialized in this specific type of fencing for many years, improving our fence system year after year and can offer you a solution that works.
  • Renting? Need a temporary garden fence or seasonal garden fence? All of our garden fences with ground sleeves can be installed permanently or made removable if needed. Use included locking set screws to release our fence posts. A good example would be installing a fence for the growing season then taking it down after the season is over, leaving a wide open space to till in the spring.
  • Most of our garden fence kits include fencing that's overlapped on top of the ground and pinned to the ground with included ground stakes. This is very important for gardens because it covers changes in elevation and prevents garden pests from being able to dig to get in.
  • Many different custom garden fence options - height, length, opening size of fencing, permanent, removable, with tensioning, strength of fencing and more.
  • Detailed how to garden fence instructions are provided including animated drawings, pdf copies of written instructions and some video examples of how to build a garden fence.
  • Patent pending - a lot of our key components are proprietary and in the patent process. As innovators in our field, and the first (since 1992) there are companies out there that specialize in copying product ideas, undercutting the price and selling what appears to be the same product but is not, unfortunately. Please check carefully if comparison shopping and email us with questions.
  • Its our product; we ship our garden fence products direct to you from our warehouses coast to coast. No middlemen or drop shipping from 3rd party warehouses.

Garden Fence Frequently Asked Questions

What type of fencing is best for gardens?

The best type of garden fencing is a one inch or smaller opening size metal fence, or fence with a one inch or smaller opening size bottom. Rabbits and other rodents can push through 1 ½ inch openings to access your garden.

How do I build a fence for my garden?

Garden fences are made of support posts, rolls of fencing material and hardware. Ground sleeves are first driven into the ground with a sledge hammer, posts then slide in the ground sleeves and secure with locking set screws. Fencing material is either attached to the posts directly with fence ties or attached to tension cable which offers additional support. Typical garden fences are buried at the bottom of the fence or overlapped and pinned to the ground with stakes to prevent animals from digging under the fence.

Do I need a fence around my vegetable garden?

Yes. In most cases if you’re growing something an animal wants to eat it. The most common garden pests are rabbits, deer, groundhogs, chipmunks, squirrels and birds. To keep out all animals a garden fence with four sides and a top is needed.

What is the best height for a garden fence?

The most common height for a small fence is 6 feet tall. For taller garden fence areas 7, 7/2 and 8 feet tall is used especially to keep out deer.

What is the easiest garden fence to install?

The easiest garden fence to install uses ground sleeves. Ground sleeves are first driven into the ground with a sledge hammer, posts then slide in the ground sleeves and secured with a locking set screw. The posts can be permanent or removable. Garden fences with tensioning are not removable. Its easier to remove a fence without overlap, than one with overlap.
