How to Choose the Right Rabbit Fence

Your fence will need one of two configurations:

  • Standalone, single layer rabbit fence with overlap: This consists of a 24”-36” metal fence (1x1 opening size or smaller) with 6-12 inches of fencing pinned to the ground on the outside. This overlap keeps pests from digging under or tunneling underneath the barrier. This is the most practical solution when used as rabbit fencing for gardens and small or enclosed areas

  • Combination fence with a rodent barrier base: Bigger properties may benefit from this configuration, which features a tall poly fence (not chew proof) that is paired with a 3 ft metal bottom layer installed at 28” with 8” of ground overlap. This helps keep rabbits in and pests out with one easy-to-install system. It’s your go-to garden fencing for rabbits as well as some bigger animals. The metal bottom layer needs to be 1x1 opening size or smaller

Choosing the Right Opening

When choosing your rabbit fencing for gardens, always go with a fence with a one inch or smaller opening mesh size. While a hex shaped chicken wire fence for rabbits can offer some protection, it has a much lower breaking strength than square welded wire options, which offer up to 2000 lbs per square foot.

  • Renting? Need a temporary rabbit fence or seasonal rabbit fence? All our fences with ground sleeves can be installed permanently or made removable if needed. Use included locking set screws to release our fence posts. A good example would be installing a fence for the growing season then taking it down after the season is over.

  • We make our rabbit fences quick and easy to install. Using patent pending ground sleeves for regular posts and gates and large ground sleeves for corner posts and driveway gates no concrete footings are needed. Posts are secured with a locking set screw inside each sleeve. Large areas can be installed in a fraction of the time it would take for conventional fencing. Most customers install this type of fence themselves without contractors.

What is the best rabbit fence?

The best rabbit fence will depend on your exact needs, but a general starting point is a 1x1 black welded wire rabbit fence with at least 6-12” of overlap staked to the ground. Larger properties may require pairing it with a poly deer fence.

How tall does a rabbit fence need to be?

To prevent rabbits only, rabbit fencing should be at least 24-36” tall. Rabbits rarely jump higher than 3 feet before moving on.

Can rabbits dig under a fence?

Yes. Rabbits are very good at digging. Always use overlap or buried fencing to keep your property protected. This is especially vital for rabbit fencing for gardens.

Is chicken wire fence for rabbits effective?

You can use a chicken wire fence for rabbits, but it’s not as strong as heavier-duty options. It should be used for light-duty use. Welded wire is strong and longer lasting while also providing better chew resistance.
