Metal Fence Rolls

If you’re looking for hardware cloth that holds up over the long haul, then Critterfence’s metal fence rolls are the optimum choice. Compare your options by opening size, gauge, and application, so you can find the right product for your job and order with confidence.

Our Hardware Cloth Will Outlast the Competition

Every Critterfence© wire fence roll is hot-dip galvanized after welding — not electro-galvanized like our competitors. This greatly extends the lifespan of the coating and the steel underneath. We then add PVC to the outer layer for a metal fence that is salt-spray-approved and rated for direct soil contact. Our fences last up to 25 years in outdoor conditions.

Choose the Right Opening Size for Your Application

The most common fencing mistake is choosing an inappropriate opening size for your needs. A 2×2 or 2×4 metal fence roll works best when blocking deer, dogs, and bigger farm animals from getting in or out — but it won’t stop rabbits, snakes, or other small animals. ½″ and smaller fence works well as hardware cloth to keep a garden safe. Not sure which opening size is best for your project? Get in touch, and our experts are happy to help.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions on Our Wire Fence Roll

What’s the difference between a wire fence roll and a metal fence roll?
The terms wire fence roll and metal fence roll refer to the same product category — both describe wire-welded wire or wire mesh sold in rolls. When comparing metal fence rolls, look at opening size, wire gauge before and after coating, galvanization method, and whether there is PVC coating.
What’s the difference between a wire fence roll and a hardware cloth fence?
A hardware cloth fence is a specialized kind of metal fence used for gardening and vermin control. It features especially tight opening sizes (½″ to ¼″, usually) to keep out as many pests as possible. Several Critterfence© wire fence rolls qualify as hardware cloth.
How do I choose the right wire fence roll opening size for my animal?
The opening size is crucial for containing the animals you have in mind — whether keeping them in or out. A 2×2 or 2×4 is usually fine for dogs, deer, and other large animals. Smaller animals like rabbits, snakes, rodents, and groundhogs require 1×1 or smaller. If you need to contain or exclude multiple animal types, a graduated metal fence roll (where opening sizes vary from the bottom to the top of the fence) may be the right choice. ½″ or smaller openings are also called hardware cloth and are optimal for garden pest control.
Why is hot-dip galvanization important in a metal fence roll?
Hot-dip galvanization is the process that protects the steel from corrosion and rust. The welded wire is submerged in molten zinc after welding, which provides a thicker, more consistent coating that bonds to all points of the fencing. Electro-galvanizing — the standard on many commercial fences — wears away sooner and eventually exposes the metal to the elements. Every Critterfence© metal fence roll is hot-dip galvanized for superior weather resistance and long-term protection.
Can metal fence rolls be used in direct contact with the ground?
Yes, but only with specially engineered fencing rolls. Critterfence© wire fence rolls are salt-spray-approved and rated for soil-to-fence contact, making them suitable for ground-level and partial-burial applications alike. Always confirm soil contact ratings before buying any metal fence roll if you plan to bury the bottom edge to block burrowing or digging animals.
